Polyurea certifications rest on tests such as adhesion and thickness: pull-off tester and caliper on a grey polyurea membrane

Pull-off test dollies bonded to a grey polyurea layer, with an adhesion tester, a cut sample of the layer and a digital caliper for thickness.

Polyurea certifications often appear in tenders in Egypt as a short list of logos. However, each mark covers one product, one use and a set of conditions. This guide explains what CE, ETA, BBA, WRAS and Applus really cover. It also shows what they leave out and how to check each one. As a worked example, we use Polyurea Rayston from Krypton Chemical. Its datasheet lists all of these marks.

On large projects, the consultant often asks for a submittal before work starts. In most cases, that file holds the datasheet and the certificates of the product. So the consultant needs to know what each document proves. For example, a mark that fits a roof may say nothing about a tank. Likewise, a mark that is valid in the UK may not apply in another country.

Every mark in this guide was issued for a named product. In other words, it does not travel to a similar product. Also, it does not belong to the firm that applies it. Krypton’s note on pure polyurea vs hybrid on roofs makes this point. It says a generic polyurea line on a drawing is not a specification. Instead, you should write the commercial name.

The Polyurea Rayston datasheet lists CE marking to EN 1504-2, reference 0370-CPR-2247. EN 1504-2 is the European standard for surface protection of concrete. So this mark covers the product as a concrete protection layer. It is not a roof or drinking-water approval.

The ETA 16/0148 (PDF) was issued on 10/10/2018 by IETcc in Madrid under ETAG 005. In short, it covers a “Liquid Applied Roof Waterproofing Kit, based on Pure Polyurea”. The kit has three parts:

  • Primer: Rayston Epoxy 100 (0.3–0.8 kg/m²) or Humidity Primer (0.3–0.5 kg/m²).
  • Membrane: Polyurea Rayston, at least 2 kg/m².
  • Topcoat: Impertrans or Colodur, pigmented, at 0.25–0.35 kg/m².

The ETA sets a working life of 25 years (W3) at a minimum thickness of 1.9 mm. However, it also states that this working life “cannot be interpreted as a guarantee given by the manufacturer”. In addition, it asks for qualified installers and allows only the kit components.

The BBA certificate 18/5582 (PDF) covers the Polyurea Rayston System on flat or pitched roofs with limited or pedestrian access. Under normal service, and with care and repair, it expects a service life in excess of 25 years. Its second issue is dated 5 November 2021. Note two limits. First, only installers trained and approved by the certificate holder may install it. Second, the certificate is valid only within the UK.

WRAS approval 2208579 is a UK material approval for contact with drinking water, to BS 6920. The listing in the WRAS directory sets these limits:

  • Blue version only, made from components A, B and C (pigment paste).
  • Mixed and applied as in the datasheet dated 13/09/22.
  • Water up to 60 °C.
  • Expiry on 31/08/2027.
  • Valid only when applied by applicators that Krypton Chemical has authorised or certified.

Krypton’s WRAS note for drinking-water reservoirs also warns against moving WRAS onto Impermax or Impermax Polyurea H.

Applus, an independent lab, ran a drinking-water migration test on Polyurea Rayston (nº 928/09/8505). Like WRAS, however, it covers the lining material only. It does not cover the primer, the tank or the full system.

Polyurea certifications rest on lab tests like this: technician setting a sample in a material testing machine
A laboratory technician fixes a sample in a material testing machine before the test.

The datasheet also lists an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD-IES-0020897) and a root resistance test to CEN/TS 14416:2014. In other words, these are a declaration and a test. Neither is an approval for a given project.

Polyurea is a family, not one product. For instance, Krypton’s notes list these separate marks:

  • Impermax Polyurea H (hot-spray hybrid): ETA 11/062.
  • Impermax Polyurea H Flex (hot-spray hybrid): ETA 21/0740 for bridge decks.
  • Impermax Cold Polyurea: ETE 17/0509.
  • Impermax (1K): an aromatic polyurethane, not a polyurea, with ETA 06/0263.

So never copy a mark from one name to another.

  1. Open the document, not a logo strip.
  2. Check the product name, the colour and the use.
  3. Then check the limits: temperature, country and expiry date.
  4. Finally, check the conditions for installers.

For WRAS, search the WRAS approvals directory. For BBA, the certificate tells readers to confirm the latest issue on the BBA website. For ETAs, EOTA (eota.eu) is the European body behind them.

No. WRAS 2208579 covers the cured lining material, within the limits above. Therefore, the primer and the tank are outside it. Our water tank waterproofing guide covers other tank options.

The certificate itself says it is valid only within the UK. In Egypt, it can serve as background data, but not as a local approval.

It assumes a 25-year working life to help you choose products. However, it says this figure is not a promise from the manufacturer.

In fact, WRAS approves materials, not firms. The listing applies only when Krypton-authorised applicators install the material. So ask the applicator for that authorisation in writing.

No. Instead, each product carries its own marks. Our hot and cold applied polyurea article explains the two methods.

Send us the datasheets and certificates in your tender. First, we will check them against the product and the use. Then we will explain each mark in plain words.
