Wall thermal insulation gets less attention than roof insulation in Egypt, yet walls take a large share of the summer heat. West and south walls bake all afternoon, then release that heat into rooms well into the night. As a result, air conditioners run longer and bills climb. This guide compares three ways to insulate walls with products from the data sheets: XPS boards, polyurethane spray foam and insulating coatings. It also explains where each one fits.

Why Walls Need Insulation in a Hot Climate
A typical Egyptian wall is red brick or concrete block with cement plaster. These materials store heat well. However, they resist its flow poorly. So the inside face of a sunny wall slowly warms up during the day.
Roof insulation alone, though, does not solve this. In multi-storey buildings, most rooms have no roof above them at all. Their heat gain comes through the walls and windows instead. That is why wall thermal insulation matters for apartments, villas, offices and factories.
Comparing the Options for Wall Thermal Insulation
When comparing options for wall thermal insulation, the key number is thermal conductivity, λ. In short, a lower value means less heat flow through the same thickness.
| Material (data sheet) | Thermal conductivity | Typical role on walls |
|---|---|---|
| INSUTECH XPS boards | 0.025 W/m·K (30–40 mm), 0.026 W/m·K (50–60 mm) | Cavity, internal, external and below-grade walls |
| INSUboard XPS | 0.0289 W/m·K maximum | Cavity, internal and external walls, EIFS |
| Rayston Foam 40E spray foam | 0.024 W/m·K | Walls over concrete, metal and plywood |
| Insulate Plus coating | 0.194 W/m·K (600 microns) | Surface coat against heat and condensation |
The table shows a clear gap. On one hand, boards and foam work at a thickness of several centimetres. On the other hand, a coating works at well under one millimetre. For example, the INSUTECH sheet gives a thermal resistance of 1.6 m²K/W for a 40 mm board. Using the sheet’s own formula, R = d/λ, a 0.6 mm coat of Insulate Plus gives about 0.003 m²K/W. So the coating supports a wall system; it does not replace boards or foam.
Where insulating coatings fit
Insulate Plus from Krypton Chemical is a water-based acrylic coating with thermal insulating properties. Its sheet also lists an anti-condensation effect and acoustic benefits. Besides, it applies to plaster, concrete and metal.
- Minimum thickness: 500 microns.
- Theoretical yield: about 3 m²/kg.
- Coats: three by brush or roller, or one to two by airless spray.
- Recoat: at least 16 hours between coats.
- Conditions: +5 to +45 °C and up to 85% relative humidity.
For exterior walls, the sheet suggests finishes such as Impermax Aqua to prolong its effect. In practice, we use it where condensation, surface heat or a thin finish is the main issue. For a real cut in heat flow, a board or foam layer still does the main work.
XPS Boards for Cavity and Internal Walls
For most wall thermal insulation jobs, we start with extruded polystyrene (XPS) boards, a rigid closed-cell foam. INSUTECH, an Egyptian producer, lists wall insulation among the uses of its XPS boards. The sheet also says the board helps prevent moisture build-up in walls.
| Property | INSUTECH XPS (data sheet) |
|---|---|
| Density | 32–36 kg/m³ |
| Thermal resistance | 1.2 / 1.6 / 2.0 / 2.4 m²K/W for 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 mm |
| Compressive strength at 10% | 250 kPa (30 mm), 350 kPa (40–60 mm) |
| Water absorption, 7-day immersion | ≤ 0.7% by volume |
| Maximum service temperature | 75 °C |
INSUboard from Supreme Petrochem is another XPS board in the data sheets. Its catalogue lists external, internal and cavity wall insulation, as well as EIFS. It also says the board can meet ASTM C578 Types IV to VII on request. The standard grade is classed B2 to DIN 4102, with B1 available on request.
Cavity walls
A double wall with an air gap is common in better Egyptian villas and some factories. Placing XPS boards inside the cavity turns that gap into a real insulation layer. First, the mason builds the inner leaf. Then the crew fixes the boards against it, with tight joints. Finally, the outer leaf goes up with the usual wall ties.
Internal lining
Where the facade cannot change, however, boards can go on the inside face. The finishing layer over them, such as gypsum board or plaster on mesh, follows the designer’s detail. Admittedly, this approach loses some floor area. Even so, it suits refurbishment of single rooms or flats.
Wall Thermal Insulation Below Grade
Below-grade walls, in contrast, need damp-proofing and insulation together. Nilocoat R from BituNil, distributed by Nile Waterproofing, handles both jobs. Its sheet describes a solvent-free rubberised bitumen coating for damp-proofing below-grade walls. It also serves as an adhesive for compatible insulation. Target crews follow the sheet’s steps:
- Clean the wall and repair any cracks.
- Prime porous surfaces with Nilocoat R diluted 1:1 with water.
- Apply two coats of 0.6–0.8 kg/m² each, the second at right angles.
- To bond boards, coat both surfaces at 1.0–1.25 kg/m².
- Wait until the adhesive is tacky, then press the XPS boards firmly.
- Hold them in place until the bond develops, then backfill carefully.
Moreover, the sheet gives an elongation of 600% to ASTM D412. It also lists water vapour transmission of 0.8 g/m²/24 h to ASTM E96.
Spray Foam on Walls
Rayston Foam 40E from Krypton Chemical is a two-component polyurethane spray foam, based on a Huntsman system. Its sheet lists roofs, walls and floors over metal, concrete and plywood. As a result, it also suits metal-clad warehouse walls. Because it is sprayed, it fills irregular surfaces and wraps around columns and beams.
| Property | Rayston Foam 40E (data sheet) |
|---|---|
| Core density | 40 ± 2 kg/m³ |
| Thermal conductivity | 0.024 W/m·K (ASTM C518) |
| Compressive strength at 10% | 170 kPa |
| Closed cell content | ≥ 90% |
| Fire classification | Euroclass F / B3 |
Application limits
- Ambient and substrate temperature between +10 and +48 °C.
- Relative humidity below 85% and wind up to 20 km/h.
- Passes of 10 to 20 mm; thicker passes lower the density.
- For more than 6 cm in total, a 10-minute gap between layers.
- Spray distance of about 80 cm, with plural-component equipment.
The fire class needs careful attention. Euroclass F is the lowest class. Therefore, spray foam on walls must sit behind a covering that the fire code accepts, especially inside occupied buildings. In addition, the isocyanate component irritates the airways, eyes and skin. Crews need proper protective equipment and ventilation.
Practical Steps for Wall Thermal Insulation
Target designs and installs insulation systems across Egypt. On most jobs, our sequence looks like this:
- Survey which walls face the sun and which rooms overheat.
- Choose the system: cavity boards, internal lining, basement boards or spray foam.
- Check the fire rules for the chosen material and its covering.
- Prepare and repair the wall surface.
- Install the boards or foam at the specified thickness.
- Close the layer with the specified finish or protection.
- Seal gaps around windows, beams and service openings.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving XPS boards in the sun on site, or under dark plastic sheets. The INSUboard safety sheet warns this can damage the boards.
- Leaving spray foam exposed inside a building.
- Expecting a thin coating to perform like a 4 cm board.
- Skipping insulation at concrete columns and beams, which then act as thermal bridges.
- Spraying foam in strong wind or on a wet wall.
FAQ
Which is better for walls, XPS or spray foam?
Both have low conductivity in their sheets. In general, XPS boards suit cavities and flat walls. Spray foam suits irregular shapes and metal walls, provided the fire covering is designed in.
Can I insulate an existing flat without demolition?
Usually yes, with an internal lining of boards on the hottest walls. Our thermal insulation team can assess each wall.
Is an insulating paint enough on its own?
Not for heat flow. Instead, it helps with condensation and surface temperature. See our page on acrylic thermal insulation coating for its typical uses.
Do XPS boards absorb water in basements?
The INSUTECH sheet gives water absorption of 0.7% by volume or less after 7 days’ immersion. That is why XPS is a common choice below grade.
Conclusion
Wall thermal insulation cuts summer heat gain where the roof cannot help. XPS boards suit cavity, internal and basement walls, while spray foam covers complex shapes. Meanwhile, insulating coatings add value on top, but they are not a substitute for real thickness.
