Irrigation canal lining reduces the water a canal loses into the ground before it reaches the fields. In Egypt, every cubic metre counts. So the choice of lining matters, and it depends mainly on whether the canal is earth or concrete. This guide compares the main options from their data sheets and explains how Target plans a lining job.

A canal dug in permeable soil loses part of its flow through the bed and banks. Moreover, old concrete canals crack and lose water through joints. Both forms of loss reduce the water that reaches farms at the end of the network.

For this reason, canal rehabilitation and lining is a national priority. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation leads this work across the country. Contractors and owners of private farm canals face the same question: which lining suits which canal?

There are three main routes for irrigation channels:

  • Earth canals: a textured HDPE geomembrane placed under a protective cover.
  • Concrete canals needing a flexible film: a polyurethane membrane such as Impermax Aqua 2K.
  • Concrete canals needing a cement-based coat: Rayston 170 Elastic or Rayston 170.

Besides the canal type, the right irrigation canal lining depends on the closure window. Canals usually close for a short winter period, so curing times and weather limits on each sheet shape the programme. Likewise, access for trucks and pumps affects the choice between rolls and site-mixed coatings.

On earth canals, a geomembrane stops seepage through the bed and banks. Moreover, textured sheet grips the soil better on slopes, which helps the cover layer stay in place.

The GSE HD Texture data sheet from Solmax lists thicknesses from 0.75 to 2.50 mm. Strength at break rises from 8 to 26 N/mm across that range (ASTM D6693). In addition, GSE states that GSE HD is produced in 6th of October City. For more on choosing sheet thickness, see our HDPE landfill liner guide, which covers the same property table.

An exposed liner in a working canal faces cleaning tools, animals and floating debris. For this reason, designers usually cover it with soil or thin concrete panels. In addition, the sheet edges go into anchor trenches along the bank crests. Wide rolls also help, because fewer seams mean fewer weak points. For example, the GSE sheet lists rolls 7.0 m wide.

Impermax Aqua 2K is a solvent-free polyurethane membrane from Krypton Chemical. Its data sheet says it is best suited for water tanks, canals and aquaculture installations. It is also certified for drinking-water contact under EU regulation 98/83/EC, and it carries CE marking to EN 1504-2.

The main values from the sheet are:

  • Elongation at break above 130%, tensile strength 4 MPa.
  • One coat of up to 1.5 kg/m² gives about 1 mm.
  • Pot life 45–50 minutes at 18 °C and 40% RH.
  • Geomax reinforcement builds thick layers, even on slopes.

However, the sheet sets strict substrate rules. The concrete must be free of water pressure from below, with moisture below 4%. New concrete needs at least 21 days before coating. Air temperature should stay between 10 and 30 °C, with humidity below 60%. Finally, it changes colour in sunlight, without loss of mechanical properties.

By contrast, cement-based coatings tolerate damp concrete better. Krypton offers two that list canal-type uses.

Rayston 170 Elastic is a two-component, polymer-modified elastic slurry. Notably, its sheet lists water canals among structures under hydraulic pressure. Crack bridging exceeds 1.0 mm at 23 °C, and elongation reaches 65% (ASTM D412). Two coats are always required: 1–1.5 kg/m² on a damp surface, then 0.8–1 kg/m².

Rayston 170 is an acrylic-modified cement coating. Similarly, its sheet lists coating of seawater channels and protection against brackish water. In DIN 1048 tests, it resisted 7 bar. For sustained pressure, the sheet gives 4 kg/m² for 3 bar and 6 kg/m² for 7 bar. It also states approval by Egypt’s National Organisation for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage. Coverage is 1.8 kg/m² per 1 mm.

The choice depends on the concrete. If the canal has hairline cracks or thermal movement, Rayston 170 Elastic suits it thanks to its crack bridging. On the other hand, if the concrete is sound and you need a hard coat against water pressure and brackish water, Rayston 170 fits. Its sheet lists elongation of only more than 5% (unbonded), far below the elastic version.

First of all, the canal must be dry and closed to flow before work starts. Within that window, Target follows a set sequence:

  1. Drain the reach and remove silt, weeds and loose concrete.
  2. Repair broken panels and open joints.
  3. Prepare the surface by grinding or blasting, as the sheet asks.
  4. Check moisture for PU systems, or pre-wet the concrete for cement slurries.
  5. Apply the primer where the system requires it.
  6. Apply the coats at the rates on the data sheet.
  7. Treat slopes and joints with extra care, using reinforcement where listed.
  8. Cure and protect before refilling the canal.

In practice, slopes are where coatings sag and thin out. Impermax Aqua 2K uses Thickening Additive on vertical or sloped walls. Joints also move with temperature, so an elastic product suits them better than a rigid coat.

  • Coating over trapped water. PU systems need a dry base with no pressure from below.
  • Applying cement slurry on dry concrete. Rayston 170 requires pre-wetting.
  • Too much in one coat. Rayston 170 Elastic limits a single layer to 4 kg/m².
  • Skipping curing. Sun and wind dry cement coats too fast.
  • Refilling too early. Follow the curing times on each sheet.

Usually, a textured HDPE geomembrane under a protective cover is the best fit. Coatings need a rigid concrete base.

No. Impermax Aqua 2K needs a dry base, and cement slurries need damp concrete without standing water.

Impermax Aqua 2K holds drinking-water certification under 98/83/EC. Rayston 170 states approval by Egypt’s National Organisation for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage.

Inspect it after each closure period. Then repair small cracks or damaged areas early, before they spread.

Irrigation canal lining starts with one question: earth or concrete? Earth canals suit textured HDPE, while concrete canals suit PU membranes or elastic cement coatings. In each case, the data sheet sets the substrate rules.
