A PVC tunnel waterproofing membrane is a factory-made sheet that wraps a tunnel or deep structure before the final concrete lining. It must stay watertight under groundwater for decades, and nobody can reach it once the lining is cast. So the system includes more than a sheet: a protective fleece, welded seams and a way to locate and seal leaks later. This guide explains each part and how Target works on underground projects.

A tunnel sits inside wet ground, often below the water table. Its outer shell may be shotcrete, segments or diaphragm walls. Moreover, each of these surfaces is rough, and some keep seeping during construction.

A liquid coating needs a dry, smooth surface to bond. A loose-laid sheet, on the other hand, can go onto a damp, irregular face. In addition, the sheet has a factory-controlled thickness, which a sprayed or rolled film cannot match on site.

In Egypt, the same logic applies to metro boxes, road underpasses and deep basements. The Cairo Metro network is a familiar example of large underground work in the city.

Sikaplan WP 1100-15HL is a 1.5 mm homogeneous sheet based on plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PVC-P). Sika lists it for the waterproofing of tunnels and all kinds of below-ground structures against groundwater. It conforms to EN 13491 for geosynthetic barriers in tunnels and underground structures and carries CE marking.

The 1.5 mm thickness includes a 0.60 mm yellow signal layer over a dark-grey base. As a result, any scratch or puncture shows up clearly during inspection.

Key values from the data sheet:

  • Water tightness: < 10⁻⁷ m³·m⁻²·d⁻¹ (EN 14150).
  • Tensile strength: > 17 N/mm² machine direction, > 16 N/mm² cross direction.
  • Elongation: > 300% in both directions.
  • Static puncture: 1.75 kN (EN ISO 12236).
  • Low-temperature behaviour: ≤ −20 °C, pass.
  • Rolls: 2.20 m × 20 m, about 1.95 kg/m².

The sheet also states that the membrane can go on wet substrates. However, it is not bitumen-resistant. Against bitumen or plastics other than PVC, it needs a geotextile separation layer heavier than 300 g/m².

First, the fleece goes between the rough substrate and the PVC tunnel waterproofing membrane. In this way, it levels small bumps and protects the sheet from sharp points.

Sika Geotextile-500 is a 500 g/m² polyester (PET) fleece, 3.6 mm thick. Its data sheet lists it as a levelling and protective layer under sheet membranes in tunnels, basements and other underground structures. Tensile strength is 25.0 kN/m (machine direction) and 27.2 kN/m (cross direction). It also installs on damp and wet substrates.

Because the geotextile is not stabilised against sunlight, its sheet asks crews to cover it within one month of installation. Rolls are 2 m × 50 m and are spot-fastened with disks.

Even so, a tough PVC sheet still depends on its substrate. For this reason, the Sikaplan WP 1100-15HL sheet sets clear limits:

  • The shotcrete profile must not exceed a length-to-depth ratio of 5 : 1, with a minimum radius of 20 cm.
  • No broken aggregate, nails, wires or loose stones may stay on the surface.
  • Leaks must be sealed with a plugging mortar or drained before the fleece goes on.
  • Where needed, a fine gunite layer at least 5 cm thick, with aggregate not over 4 mm, smooths the profile.
  • Steel girders, mesh and anchors also need at least 5 cm of fine sprayed concrete.

All overlaps of the PVC tunnel waterproofing membrane are heat-welded. The sheet names hand welding guns and automatic welders with electronic temperature control. Before any welding, the crew runs trials on site to set speed and temperature.

The whole PVC tunnel waterproofing membrane depends on its seams. For this reason, the sheet sets a seam peel resistance of at least 6.0 N/mm (EN 12316-2). It also requires shear tests to break outside the seam, not inside it. The crew therefore checks every seam after cooling and before covering it.

Next comes compartmentation. The sheet lists Sika Waterbar Type AR and DR as ancillary products for fixing pieces and concrete joints. In practice, such profiles split the membrane into separate areas. Consequently, if a leak happens, water stays inside one compartment instead of travelling along the whole tunnel.

Each compartment gets Sikaplan WP Control Socket 6 flanges. These are PVC-P base plates, 180 mm in diameter, heat-welded to the sheet and connected to injection hoses. According to their sheet, they serve as leak-detection and injection access within a compartment of basement and tunnel waterproofing.

If a compartment shows water after casting the lining, the crew injects through its hoses. The control socket sheet names Sika Injection-306 as a system product. The Injection-306 sheet lists injection repair of damaged single- and double-layer membranes among its uses.

Injection-306 has a very low viscosity, comparable to water. Also, the crew can adjust its curing time between 10 and 60 minutes. As a result, the resin can travel through the compartment before it cures.

The Sika sheets state that only Sika-trained or approved contractors should install these systems. Within that framework, Target follows this sequence:

  1. Inspect the shotcrete and seal or drain all active leaks.
  2. Correct the profile with fine gunite where needed.
  3. Fix Sika Geotextile-500 with disks.
  4. Loose-lay the PVC sheet and fix it to the disks by welding.
  5. Weld all overlaps after on-site welding trials.
  6. Weld waterbars to form compartments, then add control sockets and hoses.
  7. Inspect the signal layer for damage and test the seams.
  8. Hand over for lining works; test watertightness to the client’s specification.

  • Laying onto sharp shotcrete. The fleece cannot bridge every spike.
  • Contact with bitumen. The sheet needs a separation layer heavier than 300 g/m².
  • Skipping welding trials. Temperature and speed change with site conditions.
  • No compartments. A single leak can then travel the full tunnel length.
  • Leaving fleece exposed for weeks. Cover it within the period on its sheet.

A PVC sheet goes onto damp, rough substrates and has a factory-controlled thickness. In addition, compartments and sockets allow targeted repair later.

Simply put, it makes damage easy to see. A scratch through the 0.60 mm yellow layer exposes the dark base underneath.

Yes. According to its data sheet, Sikaplan WP 1100-15HL suits contact with acidic soft water that is aggressive to concrete.

The Sika sheets limit installation to approved, trained contractors. The geotextile sheet also asks for experience in tunnel lining. In addition, the membrane sheet requires testing and approval of the structure’s watertightness after completion.

A PVC tunnel waterproofing membrane works as a system: geotextile, welded PVC-P sheet, compartments and control sockets. Each layer has a job, and the sheets set clear rules for substrate, welding and repair.
